Oedipus the King

The most important characters in the story are Oedipus, Iocasta and Creon. Oedipus is a brave man with strong will power because he was very persistent on finding the man who murdered the king of Thebes,  Laius. Iocasta is the queen of Thebes who is now the wife of Oedipus. She is a woman with a kind heart because she showed her willingness to help Oedipus seek the truth. Creon is a man with great determination to look for the murderer of the former king. He is a man that is loyal to his kingdom.

Oedipus is the husband of Iocasta and at the same time Iocasta’s son. He was adopted by King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth. Iocasta is the wife of Oedipus and former wife of Laius. Iocasta and Laius had a son that turned out to be Oedipus. She is also the sister of Creon.

“Oedipus the king” is mostly set on the kingdom of Thebes since Thebes is now the kingdom of Oedipus. This story is set on the ancient times where there are many kings and queens on different places instead of presidents.

The conflict of this story started when Apollo prophesied that Laius’ son would eventually kill him and would marry his wife. So they decided to kill their son. They sent him to a forest to be killed by one of their man. The man failed to accomplish his mission. When the child grew up he became the heir of Corinth. One of the problems he encountered was when a drunk man told him that he is adopted. Oedipus was determined to find the truth so he set out for a journey and left Corinth. There, he encountered a man in a carriage with knights surrounding him. The men were trying to stop Oedipus so Oedipus killed them all. Soon, he reached the city of Thebes. A man called Creon asked for his help to find the murderer of their king. Because of Oedipus’ determination to find the murderer, he went to Teiresias to seek for help but instead was accused of killing the king. They were arguing and Oedipus involved Creon in the argument. Creon and Oedipus had a fight as well. Soon, his wife Iocasta decided to help him.

The climax of this story is when Oedipus finally met the Theban shepherd that Iocasta ordered to kill her son. Oedipus found out the truth and was devastated to know that he killed his father and married his mother. The prophecy came true. Soon, Iocasta killed herself.

His problem with other people was solved when he found out the truth, but still he was very devastated specially when he found out that Iocasta killed herself.

If I could create another ending, I would rather see Iocasta alive and accepting her fate. It would have been nice that after everything that happened, they would still consider each other as family.
